SOLUTION

The scope of work shall for this highly complex project in the heart of midtown Manhattan included the following: The existing 400-ton low pressure steam operated absorption chiller and its pumps were removed from the Fourteenth Floor Penthouse Machine room and replaced with a 600-ton electrically driven centrifugal chiller system. The cooling tower on the Fourteenth floor that serves the absorption system, was removed and replaced with three new cooling tower cells on the Fifteenth Floor Roof.

The existing three-cell cooling tower was interconnected with the new cooling tower so that all 6 cells can operate in parallel. The new and existing towers were winterized for year-round operation. The building’s chilled water system was then modified so that all chilled water distribution piping is indoors and the existing 800-ton system and the new 600-ton system operate in parallel. The existing outdoor chilled water piping was abandoned.
