SUNY at Stony Brook – CLS

New Center for Leadership and Service

The new Center for Leadership and Service within the Benedict College building on the SUNY Stony Brook  campus is the second largest space for lectures, meetings, banquets, and presentation events at the University.  WFC was engaged by the University to redesign and re-imagine the previously constrained interior volume.  The new WFC design for the Center for Leadership and Service focused on taking complete advantage of the full height and grandeur of the existing floor to underside of roof cavity and the full height exterior window assemblies which were previously concealed by low ceilings.  The new height created an opportunity to design a series of suspended acoustical panel “clouds” and a new cutting edge technology lighting system that provided the “interest” needed for the space.

WFC, while remaining aware of the need to strike a balance between the design of the new, modern space with functional noise reduction properties to suit an Assembly space, incorporated other interior design features such as undulating acoustical wood panel wall assemblies defining the ends of the space, a decorative floor to ceiling architectural metal mesh to celebrate the existing stairwell, Louis Poulson Designer lighting, and new signage that formalized and framed the view to attain the much needed sense of arrival and identity for the new Leadership and Service Center.
