Telecommunications Infrastructure Upgrade

Tunnel communications

SOLUTION

The Holland Tunnel is a highway tunnel under the Hudson River connecting the island of Manhattan in New York City with Jersey City, New Jersey at Interstate 78 on the mainland. It was the first of two tunnels built under the river, the other being the Lincoln Tunnel.

The project scope of work included the design and upgrade of the existing Tunnel telecommunications infrastructure. New York Telecom Partners(NYTP)(Boingo) engaged WFC to design, project manage, and coordinate with the client to implement a synergistic project.

The upgrade included the installation of new telecommunications equipment located within the New Jersey Land and River Building equipment room. From the equipment room, located within the Vent Building, coaxial antenna cables and power cables were routed above the North, Center, and South tubes along the plenum to provide power for a new AWS Band and distributed antenna system.

WFC’s capabilities and role included the surveying of the existing Tunnel for preparation of existing conditions drawings, determine the adequacy of existing electrical loads, determine antenna placement locations and mounting design, preparation of routing diagrams for communication cables and electrical power. All work and installation were performed while the Tunnel was operational with no impact to normal day to day operations. The result is now uninterrupted cellular communication service to those driving through the Holland Tunnel.
