SOLUTION

The Stony Brook School is a private independent Christian boarding and college preparatory school founded in 1922 for both boys and girls in grades 7 to 12 located in Stony Brook on the north shore of Long Island, New York.

Academic rigor combined with an integration of the Christian faith are central to the school’s academic tradition. WFC was called upon by the Head of the School and the Director of Academics to develop a master plan and design spaces that would provoke creativity, innovation and inspire their students in their advanced placement courses of Science Technology Engineering and Math (S.T.E.M.).

The contemporary design was executed to compliment the high level technical and engineering syllabus that the Director of Academics developed for the S.T.E.M. program.

The space was fit out with “switchable privacy glass” that uses a low-voltage electrical current to arrange liquid crystal molecules into a pattern that makes glass transparent when turned on. Turned off, the LC molecules revert to a random pattern, diffusing the light and causing the glass to become opaque. The result was a multipurpose space that the educators can use as an active screen for teaching, lecturing, or dividing the space for robotics competitions.
